Biography

BIOGRAPHY

Australian-born, Amsterdam-based musician Thomas Voss has enjoyed a diverse career as a trombonist, composer/arranger and educator. As well as having lead his own big bands and a number of small group projects, he has performed with artists including the Vanessa Perica Orchestra, Vince Jones and Kate Ceberano, and has played at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Perth International Jazz Festival and Sydney Conservatorium International Jazz Festival. Thomas also featured at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2019 and 2024 International Jazz Day concerts, with his big band headlining the latter event.

He has composed and arranged music for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, was Creative Original Music Adelaide’s 2023 Featured Composer, Composer-in-Residence for the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2022 and JazzSA Superbands’ Composer-in-Residence in 2019. He has penned test pieces for the ABODA SA and Generations in Jazz festivals, where he has also featured as an adjudicator and guest artist. Additionally, Thomas has penned dozens of arrangements for school ensembles of all sizes and levels.

 

Thomas was nominated for the 2022 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, was shortlisted for a South Australian Music Award in 2019, and placed first in the International Trombone Association’s 2017 Carl Fontana Jazz Competition, making him the first Australian to win the award.

Thomas has many years of experience teaching students at primary, secondary and conservatory levels, has lead multiple bands to podium finishes at the Generations in Jazz and ABODA SA band festivals, and has delivered clinics to secondary and tertiary level jazz ensembles. Thomas is currently completing a Master's of Music (Jazz Trombone) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
